If Scott Smith’s visit to the Tribune on Wednesday is any indication, the campaign for mayor of Mesa is about to heat up.
Said Smith, “Light rail was staring in his face and he did nothing.”
The “he” is opponent Rex Griswold who until a few months was on Mesa’s City Council.
Smith ticked off several issue areas where he faulted city leadership as he continued to position himself as the outsider and his opponent as the insider.
“Rex will talk about zoning code (but) they did nothing for five years,” Smith said, repeating the “did nothing” line.
I’m betting we’ll hear that line again.

What is this, gossip over the back fence?
How un-informative.
So Smith “ticked off several issues” separating himself from the current faulted crowd. What were they?
Rex “did nothing” for five years about the zoning code? What was Smith doing this past five years?
Light rain? “He did nothing”. What was Smith’s involvement?
What a gas bag.
Mesa, second largest city in Arizona and nothing to show for it other than a looming deficit in which past and present leadership is responsible for, and yes, the voting public. How did this happen you ask? The answer is absense of vision and responsible leadership from our elected officials, including the absense of a municipal property tax due to the fact that Mesa voters keep turning it down. Citizens, the sleeping giant needs to wake up and smell reality. The market has not yet seen the bottom and city services cannot continue at the expense of ongoing budget cuts. Mesa, its time to take a good look in the mirror rather than looking out the window and pointing fingers. Scott Smith is the answer for vision, leadership, and a comprehensive background that can and will make the difference, period.
Not sure I understand. Light rail was staring him in the face, and he did nothing…to stop it? To bring it further into Mesa? To speed up construction? To get off the tracks? Smith’s platform is still all negative—-where are the constructive ideas? Exactly WHAT should have been done to the zoning code? Exactly WHY should I vote for you, Scott?
Thanks Scott. It needs to be pointed out that Rex has been in city leadership for 5 years and has not been noticeably active in addressing the opportunities Mesa has. Rex talks about what he wants to do and ignores his last 5 ineffective years where he has done nothing.
I can’t ignore the fruitless years that Rex has served. Scott is our only hope for getting Mesa headed in the right direction.
